Minister refuses Inquiry Petition by all-Ireland human rights groups.

‘I am satisfied that there is no matter of significant public concern that would warrant reopening this case and establishing a Commission of Investigation’ Justice Minister Jim’Callaghan has decided.

This is in sharp contrast to the views expressed by Judge Edwards in the High Court the previous week.
After twenty two months of ignoring a Petition for a public inquiry into the Sallins Case, submitted by all Irish human rights groups, Fair Trials International  and endorsed by Amnesty International (Sept 2023), Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has responded with a curt refusal .
The Minister’s response contrasts with High Court views expressed recently. Having read Osgur Breatnach’s extensive application for a Miscarriage of Justice Certificate (section 9 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1993), the judge commented on the ‘serious issues’ and ‘very significant issues’ raised. Breatnach’s application will be reviewed on October 24th next.
